Tintin and the Golden Fleece (in the original French, Tintin et le mystère de la Toison d’Or) is a film first released in France on December 6, 1961.

Featuring characters from the The Adventures of Tintin comic book series written and drawn by the Belgian writer-artist Hergé, it was alive-action film with actors made-up to look like the characters and featured an original storyline not based on any of the books. Dario Moreno is part of this cast playing Midas Papos!

The film is set in Turkey and Greece with the main characters of Tintin and Captain Haddock searching for treasure after inheriting a ship called the Golden Fleece. The film was followed by a less successful sequel, Tintin and the Blue Oranges.

Cappadocia clearly attracts a lot of attention. For centuries, this region has always been a central point for pilgrims, cultural travelers, trekkers,  or … models posing for Sports Illustrated.

This is for us a new kind of visitor, but why should we mind? It was actually shot in 2009 with Anne V, Damaris Lewis, Julie Henderson & Lucia Dvorska as models.

“We all live in the Yellow Submarine” with the Beatles heading to rescue Pepperland from the Blue Meanies. However, the Meanies are constituted of various regiments including the mighty “Snapping Turks“…

Part of the “Meanies” are the four-headed bulldogs, the apple bonkers, the dreadful flying Glove and …the Snapping Turks!

The Snapping-Turtle Turks: Possibly the most pettily cruel of the Meanies, and dressed like stereotypical Turkish men, sporting handlebar moustaches and curved goatees on their chins (they even wear those curved Arabic shoes).

These are comparatively short Meanies, but are fat, and their stomachs are in fact oversized, predatory faces whose crocodile sharp-toothed mouths consume objects. We see one of these eating a little girl’s paper windmill on purpose to make her cry.

Pretty rough but so much fun…

The Beatles are spirited away in the eponymous yellow submarine to save Pepperland from the dreaded Blue Meanies. Along the way, the singing saviors encounter a surreal feast for both the eyes and ears: phantasmagorical creatures, outrageous landscapes, and colors that throb and vibrate to each and every Beatle song on the soundtrack.

It’s a journey peaking undoubtedly (and not surprisingly) with the “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” sequence. An incredible film experience at all levels, “Yellow Submarine” manages to capture exquisitely and in visual form the beauty and madness of the incomparable Beatles. (from IMDB)

It has already been 10 years that Galerist opened its doors. Ever since, the gallery has always been a pillar of the contemporary art lovers in Istanbul. Today, its main location is in the vibrant area of Pera, on the first floor of a beautiful historical building.

The institution has recently been re-structured by the new partnership of architect Melkan Gürsel Tabanlıoğlu and art collector Taha Tatlıcı with the aim to promote contemporary Turkish art worldwide while connecting Eastern and Western cultures.

The gallery has participated in international art fairs and represented Turkish contemporary art all around the world, through which it has established a certain presence and credibility on the international art platform.

Follow Ryan Doyle, free runner and parkour practioner from Liverpool through the streets, the stairs, the rooftops and the walls of this ancient city where Ryan isn’t the only one doing backflips. Even the pigeons in Mardin play tricks.

Ryan Doyle (born in 1984) is a freerunner and parkour practitioner from Liverpool, and is one of the founding athletes of the World Freerunning and Parkour Federation. In his teenage years, Doyle trained in the Korean martial art of Kuk Sool Won, and he developed his style of parkour by adding his own free-running movements to the martial arts techniques he learned.

Whether Mos Def paid the rights or not to use the sample from iconic Turkish composer Selda Bagcan and her track ‘Ince Ince Kar Yagar’ is not the point here.

It does seem after some research that Selda Bagcan jokes about spending her time in court as her music has been ripped and keep influencing artists around the world.

I always enjoy meeting passionate characters. They tend to strive for something precise, a focus in their life or even a quest (maybe  a therapy?). In this case, I was having a chat with a friend passionate about toys. The cool kind of toys. And he mentioned about one of his references: Selim Varol. With a collection gathering – some sources state – more than 15,000 pieces, Selim clearly is high up there in the hierarchy of figures collectors. Exhibited regularly, he was also part of the ToyGiants project.

ToyGiants is a photo series, an exhibition and a book created by artist duo Daniel and Geo Fuchs inspired by Selim’s wide collection. For more than 3 years, the artists shot the collection in groups or as portraits  where the toys developed sometimes a life of their own.
